Busy, messy week of weather

Ahhh, nothing like a rainy, grey Monday morning, what a way to start the week.  Today is going to be one of those classic New England days…if you don’t like the weather, just wait a minute!

Dramatic changes are on the way, as our entire region will transition from wet to white this afternoon.

MONDAY TIMELINE

Noon:  The snow has crossed 495 and will be near I95, Boston and Worcester

2pm:  Now snowing all the way down to Plymouth…bands of heavy snow, up to 1″ per hour in spots.  Roads and travel deteriorating rapidly

4pm:  Snowing in all of eastern MA down through Cape Cod and the Islands…Again, bands of heavy snow in parts of central and eastern MA.  Starting to end in western MA

8pm:  Snow is just about done, exiting the Coastline.  Few final snow showers at the immediate Shore/Cape.  Time to clean up!

Tough to put a number on the snow this afternoon given that temperatures will be marginal (close to 32).  Some of the snow will melt on contact, only the heavier bands are likely to readily accumulate.  In general, we expect there to be 1-3″ of fresh snow in eastern MA, a bit less down through the South Shore.  There could be a bit more than 3″ around and northwest of 495, especially in the elevated areas in northern Worcester county and up into New Hampshire.

Perhaps our biggest concern today is the risk of power outages.  Combining the heavy, wet snowfall with wind gusts between 20-35mph could lead to several down trees/limbs and power lines.  Highest risk would be in northern Worcester county, the Berkshires and New Hampshire.  There could be tens of thousands of outages in this region.

Conditions quiet down tonight and we get a 1 day break tomorrow before the next storm arrives on Wednesday afternoon.  This one will be the opposite of today’s storm…it will start as snow and end as rain.

Plan on snow arriving Wednesday afternoon and continuing through the first half of the night.  Overnight, it will change to ice and rain in all of southern New England.  The rain will taper off during Thursday morning.

A bit early for a snow forecast map but as of now, I would plan on several inches, perhaps something on the magnitude of 3-6″ before the change to rain.
