Wintry week of weather ahead

As expected, the snow moved in this morning and the highest impacts today will be felt over southeastern Massachusetts.

There is a winter storm warning today for areas south of the Pike (where there is the greatest chance of 6″+) and a winter weather advisory north of the Pike.

TIMELINE:

Any early rain will change over to snow between 9-11am.

The snow will come down very heavily between 10am and 3pm with rates of 1-3″ per hour at times over southeastern MA.

This afternoon, the snow will already begin to head east and out to sea.  The snow will taper off in western and central MA between 1-2pm.

Between 3-5pm, the snow will be quickly coming to an end with the final flakes falling over the Outer Cape around 5pm.

SNOWFALL TOTALS:

6″+ (up to 10″) Over southeastern MA from Plymouth to Providence and all areas south through Cape Cod

4-6″ Just south of the Mass Pike into most of Norfolk county

2-4″ Along the Pike including Boston and most of the 128 belt

0-2″ Up near the MA/NH border and northern rim of 495

WINDS

The highest winds with this storm will be over Cape Cod and the Islands.  There is a high wind warning posted there for gusts as high as 55mph through Tuesday afternoon.

Along the rest of the Coastline, gusts could reach as high as 20-40mph.

COASTAL FLOODING

We expect minor to moderate coastal flooding between Noon and 5pm this afternoon at all east, northeast and north facing beaches of Massachusetts.

High astronomical tides combined with strong, onshore winds will push 1-2′ of water onto vulnerable shore roads.

MORE COLD AND SNOW

After the storm departs, temperatures will plunge…any untreated surfaces will become slippery tonight.

Valentine’s Day will be cold and windy.

Wind Chills will be in the teens and 20s all day long.

We then have two more chances of snow…

A quick band of snow is likely later on Thursday with a few inches accumulation on average.

Then, we have to watch a storm which will be diving to our south on Saturday.  This MAY end up too far south to have any impacts here in New England but, at this time, we cannot rule out some additional snowfall.
