ABOUT THE WORKSHOP – Much like an IEP, a 504 plan can help students with learning and attention issues learn and participate in the general education curriculum. A 504 plan outlines how a child’s specific needs are met with accommodations that remove barriers to learning. Students who aren’t eligible for an IEP may qualify for a 504 plan. In part, Section 504 defines a person with a disability as someone who has a physical or mental impairment that substantially limits one or more major life activity (such as reading or concentrating) or is regarded as having an impairment that isn’t temporary. Students with a chronic condition, like a food allergy, anxiety, or depression, might be eligible for a 504 plan.
This workshop will explain 504 Plan eligibility criteria under Federal Civil Rights law and explore the protections provided for students with disabilities. Key differences between an IEP and a 504 Plan will be discussed, as well as standard and non-standard accommodations that can be used in the classroom and for
