If we go by the old adage, April showers bring May flowers…it is time to get rolling!

Hard to believe it, but today is the final day of April.

In one word, how would you classify April 2025?

I bet a lot of you would say something negative…maybe wet or cool?

Would you believe that April was not only warmer than average…

But, it was also DRIER than average!

I think the second statement is the more shocking one…Perhaps, our perception of the month was thrown off by all the wet weekend days we had.

There was at least a trace of rain on 7 of the 8 weekend days in April, including a couple of Saturday soakers.

Whatever your opinion was of April, it is time to let it go…we’re on to May!

If you remove the tree pollen factor, it is hard to find much fault with the month of May.

Average high temperatures range from a very comfy 62 (May 1) to 71 (May 31).

May is also the start of growing season in southern New England.

Typically, we receive our final frosts in the suburbs in the first 10 days of May.

When folks ask me when it is safe to plant in the spring, I usually say that Mother’s Day is a good line of delineation.

Of course, every year is different, and it is possible to get a frost or two post-Mother’s Day.

Right now, I do not see any major cold shots in the next few weeks, so most of us SHOULD be good to go in the garden, especially in eastern MA.

Perhaps my favorite thing about May, the longer days!

We have our first 8pm sunsets mid-month and gain another hour of daylight by the end of May.

Finally, if you’re concerned about the rainy weekend pattern, I have promising news already.

This Saturday is trending drier and warmer.  It now appears that most of the rain may hold off until late-day or even until the overnight.

If that trend continues, temperatures could top 80 degrees in parts of the area.
