Tracking a mix Thursday and a messy Weekend

February may be the shortest month on the calendar but it sure can pack a punch when it comes to the weather.

The entire Country is dealing with a relentless parade of winter storms and one of the most active patterns in recent memory.

Here in the Northeast, we hate to miss out on a good storm and, as luck would have it, all roads seemingly are going to run through New England.

Tuesday night:

“The one that got away”…Of all the storms in this current pattern, this one will have the least impact on New England, just scraping by well to our south.

Some light snow will fall along the South Coast, Cape Cod and the Islands, mainly between 9pm and 7am.

This will be nothing more than a little “nuisance snow” for those areas.

In general, we expect scattered coatings to about an inch of snow.

Thursday Morning:

This storm will be very similar to last Thursday’s storm, albeit a little earlier in the day.

TIMELINE:

You may see some light snow or flurries as early as 10-11pm Wednesday night.

The window for any steady, accumulating snow is very short and right around or just after midnight.

A warm “nose” of air will flood in quickly several thousand feet above our heads changing the snow to a mix of sleet and freezing rain in the pre-dawn hours on Thursday.

Areas closer to the Coastline including much of eastern MA will change over to a plain rain by dawn on Thursday.

There will be some lingering pockets of freezing rain north and west of 495 and up in southern New Hampshire.

Between 7am and noon on Thursday the steady precipitation will end and we will be left with just a few rain/freezing rain showers.

Much like last Thursday, snow accumulations will be light.  Most areas will only receive a coating to an inch before the change to ice/rain.  The best chance of seeing upwards of an inch would be across southern New Hampshire and extreme northern Essex county.  The snow will hang on just a tad longer in those areas.

The biggest concern on Thursday morning will be for some light icing, mainly in central and western MA, as well as parts of southern New Hampshire.

In these areas, temperatures will be very slow to warm above freezing and any untreated roadways will be slippery.

The Weekend:

The final storm this week comes Saturday night into Sunday.  This storm will likely be the “juiciest” of the three, bringing a good deal of precipitation along with it.

For now, it looks like it will start as snow and transition to a mix of ice and rain.

Unlike our last several storms, this will be a longer duration event, encompassing the latter half of Saturday and much of the day Sunday.

It is still too early to determine how much snow and ice will fall, or when and where the transition to rain will occur.

For now, plan on a very messy Weekend.  If you need to travel or run some errands, I would advise hedging towards the first half of Saturday.

We will have much more on this storm in the days to come.
