Eclectic blend of modern jazz and beyond

Don’t miss this opportunity to see internationally renowned bassist and composer Bruno Raberg with his quartet (Allan Chase, saxophones; Austin McMahon, Drums; Carmen Staaf, piano) bringing a mix of contemporary originals and renditions of the classic jazz repertoire to the PCA. See a sample performance here:

Since coming to the U.S. from his native Sweden in 1981, he has made nine recordings as a leader, about 30 as a sideman, and has performed with numerous world-class artists. Some of the distinguished musicians Råberg has performed and recorded with include Kenny Werner, Jerry Bergonzi, George Garzone, Sam Rivers, Billy Pierce, Donny McCaslin, Bruce Barth, Bob Moses, Mick Goodrick. His two CD set, Lifelines, features Ben Monder, Chris Creek, Matt Wilson and Ted Poor. He is also theconductor of the Wayne Shorter Quartet and the Berklee Brass and Woodwinds Ensemble. Albums include: Triloka, For the Unknown, Hot Box, Plunge, Lifelines, Chrysalis, Ascensio, Presence, Orbis, and Pentimento.

“For sheer output, it’s astounding. And the depth of expression and degree of surprise represented here is remarkable” –  Bill Milkowski – JazzTimes”Raberg’s solid bass playing is reminiscent of Dave Holland in its aspects of the focused time-rhythmic command and the harmonic development of the compositions. Lifelines is still another reminder of his exceptional skills.” – Eyal Hareuveni – AllAboutJazz

February 17, 2018 – The Vintage Vocal Quartet
Vocal harmony, swing music, and dancing!

Bring your Valentine and Dance to Big Band Hits and Sweet Harmony from the Vintage Vocal Quartet!

It only takes 4 to put a nickel in a premodern jukebox of sweet vocal harmony. The Vintage Vocal Quartet brings the big band era to life by singing while swinging on piano, guitar, bass and trumpet. The group’s repertoire is inspired by groups like Glenn Miller’s Modernaires, the Nat King Cole Trio, the Andrews Sisters, and Tommy Dorsey’s Pied Pipers, as well as singers like Bing Crosby, Frank Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald, and Jo Stafford. The VVQ has been delighting concert audiences, lindy hoppers, and swanky private events all over New England. The four singers of the VVQ also play instruments, so they pack a big sound into a small package. They are: Taylor O’Donnell – soprano voice/piano, David Thorne Scott – alto voice/bass, Adam Gautille – Tennor voice/trumpet, and Paul Pampinella – baritone voice/guitar. If you love vocal harmony and swing music, the Vintage Vocal Quartet has your number! The Vintage Vocal Quartet has your number. Sample a performance here

April 7, 2018 – MIXCLA
Latin Jazz Mix

Pulling from three dynamic spirits of The Zahili Gonzalez Zamora Project a new mixture of sonic masterpieces is born. MIXCLA is a play on words and a play on sounds hailed from the mountains of Chile, to the traditions of Japan and driven by the fires of Cuba, to achieve a truly unique Latin Jazz experience. Sample a performance here!

MIXCLA is led by composer/pianist and singer Zahili Gonzalez Zamora with Gerson Esteban Lazo Quiroga on bass and Takafumi Nikaido on percussion. This mixture of cultural spices makes the perfect recipe for any musical experience.

“Zahili’s music is a fusion of different genres that sets its foundation in the deep traditions of Cuban traditional music, bebop, funk, and soul while giving homage to more current artists such as Michel Petrucciani and Eryka Badu. Although her heart resides in the smoky parlour of 1940’s Minton’s alongside giants of American music such as Monk and Miles, Zahili’s project nevertheless dances with D’Angelo and Paquito D’Rivera in the clubs of modern Los Angeles embodying the new vision of a global music community.”
