The Star Reader program, sponsored by the Westford Elementary PTO (WEPTO), is a fun way to encourage students to get reading. All students are encouraged to participate; however, this is a voluntary program. The program runs for approximately three weeks starting in mid-February. Look for the flyer announcing the start of the program.
Here’s how it works: Students will receive a Day Star Reader form. When the students read for a specified amount of time, they color in a star. For grades K-2, the time is 15 minutes per star. For grades 3-5, the time is 20-30 minutes per star. Reading for homework or a research project counts. For those who are just learning to read, older siblings or adults can read to them. When all the stars on a coupon have been colored, students return it to the classroom to be entered into a weekly drawing.
There is no limit on how many coupons a student may turn in during any given week. On Fridays, a drawing will be held and those whose names are selected will receive a free book. After the drawing, the coupon containers are emptied and a new week starts.
