Volunteer

There are many opportunities to get involved with the PTO at Abbot.  Parent involvement in school boosts student performance and helps foster a sense of community here at Abbot.  Please consider sharing your time and talents to enhance the educational opportunities for our children.

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES

PTO BOARD

Serving on the PTO board is a wonderful way to get involved at Abbot. The board sets the priorities for fundraising, community building activities, student enrichment, grants to Abbot teachers and staff, and more.  We are looking for volunteers to serve on the board that have accounting and organizational experience or just plain enthusiasm for helping Abbot be the best for our kids. Email abbotschoolpto@gmail.com to get involved!

SQUARE ONE ART

In the spring, the PTO works in conjunction with the Art Department to help raise funds for the Abbot school.  Students create specific pieces of art which are sent to Square 1 Art to be imprinted onto many high-quality products which are available for purchase.  The products include beach bags, phone cases, water bottles, travel mugs and quilting squares, among many other items.  Abbot receives a percentage of every sale, and each student receives a free sheet of stickers made from their artwork.

CONFERENCE DINNER AND APPRECIATION LUNCHEON

On Teacher Conference days, the PTO provides dinner for the staff, which they greatly enjoy and appreciate. Sometimes we ask parents to make food, and other times we have the event catered. In May, in honor of Teacher Appreciation Week, we put on a luncheon for the staff and buy them gifts. For both of these events, volunteers are needed to coordinate the food, decorate, and set and clean up. Email abbotschoolpto@gmail.com if you would like to help with one of these events.

SPRING SOCIAL

The Abbot School spring social is one of the can’t miss events at Abbot each year!   With more than half of the entire student body in attendance kids know it’s the place to be! There is a DJ spinning music in the gym which is decorated with lights for those that want to dance, just listen or socialize with friends.  We also have a photo booth to capture the fun times with friends and we sell light up accessories to enhance the excitement!  That said, MANY volunteers are needed to make this event run smoothly and any help is welcome and appreciated!  Each year, in addition to seeking parent volunteers we also welcome high school students to join our kids out on the dance floor.  If you know of a high schooler who would like to earn community service hours in this fun way, please have them e-mail me.

APPAREL

Students and families love showing their school pride, so we have set up an online store with Northeast Promotion & Apparel. The store offers an array of items that can be personalized with a Nabnasset, Abbot or Westford logo, and also monogrammed for that extra special touch. Throughout the year, we switch around the items available to be in sync with the seasons and to give some variety.  We are hoping to start getting ready to purchase Abbot apparel items at school events and would love to have a volunteer or two head up this new venture.  Abbot apparel is a great way to keep up the Wildcat spirit. Ideas for ways to increase sales are always welcome.  Email abbotschoolpto@gmail.com to get involved!

STAR READER

Every year in March WEPTO generously sponsors our Star Reader program. Students who have read during the week can fill out a coupon and enter it into a drawing for a free book. The winners are drawn every Friday in March during recess. Volunteers are needed to organize the drawing and help student winners with a book selection.

YEARBOOK

The yearbook is a fabulous fundraiser for the PTO and a treasured keepsake for Abbot students and their families. Photographing for the yearbook is year-round commitment starting in September and is a great way to get an inside look at what goes on at school. We are looking for parents from all three grade levels who enjoy photography to volunteer to photograph A&E events, school wide events, class parties, etc. for inclusion in the yearbook. We also need several parents who would like to work on layouts for our yearbook pages. Help in sorting orders and distributing books in June is also welcome.  Email abbotschoolpto@gmail.com if you are interested in any of these opportunities!

SAC

The School Advisory Council was mandated as a result of the Massachusetts Education Reform Act of 1993. The purpose of the Council is to assist the principal in adopting educational goals, identifying the educational needs of students, reviewing the school building’s annual budget, and formulating a school improvement plan. The Council is comprised of representatives from school administration, along with teachers, parents and a community representative.  Elections for parent spots to the School Advisory Council are held annually in the fall,  and meetings are held once a month.
