Arts & Enrichment

What is Arts & Enrichment?

The Arts & Enrichment program enhances our children’s education. These programs are “in-house field trips” taking place in an intimate classroom setting. Our mission is to provide supportive, positive and fun experiences for our children. We strive to bring school curriculum alive through storytelling, dance, music, outside performances and assemblies that provide exciting, hands-on, interactive opportunities across all grades during the school year.

These programs are wholly funded through fundraising events and generous donations from Nabnasset families. Fundraising like our Race for Education, Box Top collection and Shoe Box Recycling Program generate the budget allowing for the programs to continue each year.

Below is a glimpse of the programs that are coming to your child’s classroom. Due to the huge success of our Race for Education fundraiser for the third year in a row, we are looking to book a program for the entire school in Spring 2019.

Enrichment Grade Description
SEACOAST SCIENCE CENTER COASTAL CRITTERS Kindergarten

The Seacoast Science Center’s programs spark children’s curiosity about the world around them and engage them in hands-on activities to reinforce learning.
RHYTHM KIDS Kindergarten Children sing, dance and drum with a heightened musical appreciation, cultural awareness and smiling from ear-to-ear! Very quickly, barriers are broken down, kids are called to focus and get involved as they lead, follow, create, move, drum and sing!
MUSEUM OF SCIENCE TRAVELING PROGRAM: STAR LAB First Grade
WINGMASTERS Pre-First and First Grade The program incorporates five live North American birds of prey and explains predation, the birds’ place at the top of the food web, their different hunting adaptations and their status in a rapidly changing world. Because many birds of prey are declining in number, the presentation also features endangered raptors and explains why these species face an uncertain future.
MUSEUM OF SCIENCE TRAVELING PROGRAM: ENGINEERING BRIDGES Multi-age and Second Grade In this program, students learn how to ask questions and solve problems. The program combines literature and engineering and students build their own bridge models.
SUSAN THOMPSON Multi-age and Second Grade Susan Thompson performs “This Shining Earth: Stories from Mexico,” which incorporates masks, toys and costumes. Following her performance, the children break into smaller groups for discussions with Ms. Thompson.

School-wide Programs

Salina Yoon, author, illustrator and format designer of more than 200 books for young children, visited Nabnasset Elementary in the fall of 2018. Yoon most recently created an adorable character Penguin who goes on an adventure to discover fall in Penguin and Pumpkin. She inspired students with many lessons. Yoon, who was born in South Korea, had a difficult time in kindergarten. She taught our students that, “Being different is what makes us unique and special” and that “Ideas are like magic, you create them on your own.”

News for the Spring of 2019.

Due to the huge success of our Race for Education Fundraiser for the third year in a row, the PTO is working to book a whole school enrichment event for later in the school year.

How does all this happen?

Nabnasset Elementary School has an “Arts & Enrichment Coordinator” who is a parent volunteering their time to work closely with grade specific teachers and the principal to find enrichment programs that will best align with the curriculum and expand the excitement of learning. The coordinator spends time booking these events, greeting the artist on the day of the event and paying the artist.

We look forward to providing more enrichment programs through your continued support and event attendance.  Thank you for your generosity in helping to bring these programs to our school.
